From: Dr I Berkovitch FOR CHIPS - COMPUTER SIMULATES COMPUTER As computer circuits become more com- pressed on to those famous 'chips', it becomes more difficult to locate errors in their design. When they do not work as intended, designers cannot reach in- side to find out what is wrong. So circuit designs are simulated on existing larger computers before the chips are fabricated.IBM have developed a new simulation computer to locate & correct the design errors before engin- eering models are built. It includes 256 special processors; each simulates a part of the design. They are connected by a very fast data switch and can simulate a complete system. more follows >>>

AS RECESSION ENDS WILL POLLUTION GROW? Over many years pollution has steadily decreased. During the current recession output has fallen; often older and less efficient processes have been shut down so that less filth has poured into the air, which has become cleaner. But the Factory Inspectors are worried about what will happen when 'dormant plant' is reactivated. For the closures are not part of a process of renewal. Few new factories are being registered. In order to save cash, old plant is not being adequately maintained. This is likely to lead to pollution when they re-start. But tighter standards are coming in; 'ageing industry' may find it difficult to meet them. more science news follows >

BRITON SHARES MEDICAL NOBEL PRIZE Dr John Vane, a British researcher, shares this year's Nobel Prize for Medicine with two Swedish scientists. Between them, they have proved that certain chemicals called prostaglandins are formed in the body from essential fatty acids, & discovered their effects on the human body. The chemicals are found notably in human semen. They influence the nervous system, female reproductive organs, cir- culation & general metabolism. So far they have been used to treat disorders of circulation & peptic ulcers, and to induce childbirth or abortion. But these researches are expected to lead to much wider medical uses.  more follows >

MOTHERS DO NOT LIKE FORCEPS DELIVERIES When mothers were asked if they were "satisfied" with their experience of giving birth to a child, the most im- portant source of dissatisfaction was a forceps delivery & longer labour. Barbara Morgan and others who checked 1000 mothers (The Lancet) also found that effective relief from pain did not ensure a satisfactory experience. Pain in itself was not associated with dis- satisfaction. Pain in labour is "a more emotional & complex matter" not compar- able to other sorts of pain where there is no feeling of fulfilment.Mothers who had assisted delivery were both dissa- tisfied 48 hours later & had an un- pleasant memory a year later. more follows >>>
