Cabin in the Sky was made in 1943, and its cast list reads like a roll-call of the most talented black musicians and actors of the day. Singer Ethel Waters leads, with Eddie "Rochester" Anderson; the supporting cast includes, among others, Lena Horne, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway.  2/8 Charts 4-Tel Features Buzz Kids

The earliest Blues singers came from the deep South, where women figured mainly as objects, in song as in life. Female singers didn't appear until the Blues became popular in the rather more liberal Northern cities. Here the song became, for the first time, more important than the singer.  3/8 Charts 4-Tel Features Buzz Kids

She was also the first black woman to receive star billing on the American stage and screen. Singer-actress Lena Horne was the first black performer to be signed up on a long-term contract with a major Hollywood studio. Her major contract with MGM may sound like a fine thing, but the way she was treated by Hollywood reveals the film industry of the time in its true light. First of all, MGM always made sure she appeared in isolated guest spots, so that her scenes could be cut out when the film was released in the South.  5/8 Charts 4-Tel Features Buzz Kids
