Heavily influenced by traditional folk styles, his genius as a songwriter did not truly surface until his early 70s departure from the band. The first solo album "Henry The Human Fly" (72), though dated by eccentric sleevenotes, remains timeless in its excellent and inventive use of melody. more Thompson > BSVs Index 540 Starfile 546 SUPER SUMMER SAVINGS FROM KAYS 183 Starfile Feature 4 O'Clock Rock Buzz

The album featured such contemporary folk classics as "The End Of The Rainbow" (a doom-laden Richard accompanied by weeping guitar) and "The Great Valerio" (h—tnting Linda vocal, gentle acoustic background). This period saw Thompson's zenith as a writer, confirmed by "Hokey Pokey" (74) - an album of quirky musical gems ranging from the title track's mischievous humour to the melodic pathos of "Never Again". continues > BSVs Index 540 Starfile 546 Starfile Feature 4 O'Clock Rock Buzz

On their return the Thompsons adopted a harsher, more rhythlhc approach with "First Light" (78) and "Sunnyvista" (79), both leaning more towards rock. Richard's writing seemed to suffer during this transitional period but the change in style was mastered via the critically- lauded "Shoot Out The Lights" (82). His marriage breakup saw Richard as a solo artist again and another new style was crafted on "Hand Of Kindness" (83), and "Across A Crowded Room" (85). >> BSVs Index 540 Starfile 546 Starfile Feature 4 O'Clock Rock Buzz

Beyond his own records Thompson has guested on countless albums, and has toured both with rich instrumentation and as a solo acoustic act. He was once described as "rock's great buried treasure".
