There were signs of base metal miners resisting the falls but this was eroded. JOHANNESBURG: Gold opened lower in quiet trading and Elandsfontein fell from 1465 to 1430. Shipping issues did particularly well. HONG KONG: Scattered buying support in sluggish trading helped the Hang Seng index rise 7.37 to 895.45. HK Telephone jumped 30 cents. SINGAPORE: Late selling pared early gains and the IC index ended 2.51 down at 578.88.
