An article in the Communist newspaper Pravda said Poland had been the West's prime target in a campaign to break the Soviet Bloc's unity. It said that the US had reacted in a "truly hysterical way" to the introduction of martial law in Poland. Polish leader General Jaruzelski has said democratic reforms will survive the military clampdown. Archbishop Glemp of Poland told his countrymen the Christian message might help solve their problems. >>>>>

In a 60-minute TV address, he said "the internal and external situation" made it impossible to hold elections. Past experience showed elections had "given birth only to goons, and confusion", he said. >>>>>
