Fuel consumption was compared in 2 VC Golfs - a 1.5 litre diesel and 1.1 litre petrol with similar road performance. The diesel car used at least 28% less fuel by volume that the petrol car. In dense city traffic it saved up to 40% fuel volume compared with the petrol car.
