The negative pole is of lithium & the posi- tive of sulphur. Dr E Peled of Tel Aviv reports energy density 7 times greater than that of the widely-used Leclanche cell,100% greater than a cell using lithium and manganese dioxide. Voltage is stable at 2 to 2.1 over its lifetime. The cell is suitable for all usual applications - pacemakers watches, cameras, pocket calculators light meters and others. The high density can be used to produce smaller flatter units than with exist- ing cells can also be recharged.

The Nuclear share was 37.7% of total electricity. Next were Switzerland with 28.4%, then Sweden & Belgium, both taking over 25% from this source. Britain is now rather low in the 'league table' of 13 nations using power made from the atom, coming 8th with 12.7%. The US is apparently lower at 12% but the low proportion is deceptive because of the enormous over- all power consumption. US remains domi- nant in nuclear electric power with by far the highest no. of power stations. Bottom of the list are USSR with 5% and Italy with 1.5% nuclear.

But pressure chamber test with experienced divers show that their reasoning, arithmetic, memory, manipulation and other skills decline, & sleep is affected, when they go to pressures equivalent to depths below 300m. These effects could be very dangerous in working dives. But Dr A Baddeley has found that increasing the time allowed for reaching greater depths, and vary- ing the gas mixture by adding in some nitrogen, can lessen the effects. Work continues to find conditions that opti- mize the abilities of divers.

But the General Household Survey found that phones had increased from 67% to 75%; so did deep freezers (half of all households). Nearly four fifths had a washing machine, three fifths at least one car & three fifths central heating. We are slowly acquiring tumble driers but remain unmoved by dishwashers. In 1981 only 4% of households had one. Average size of households stayed con- stant at 2.70. A further small increase in proportion of owner-occupiers took the proportion to 54%.

If there is an accident someone in the car presses a red button. This sends a signal to a network of di- rection finding receivers. Central con- trol locates the car & sends a radio signal that lights a sign acknowledging the alarm message. Control then makes radio contact and asks for details - how many hurt & how badly. The system is claimed to be able to reduce road death by bringing help much more quickly. There is also a'breakdown'button which makes the same kind of link, but this time with the car rescue service.
