In Paris in the late 19th century the city's opera house is experiencing such serious mishaps that the owner has just walked out. He was fed up with being controlled by the legendary Phantom (Gerard Butler), a disfigured musical genius and megalomaniac who haunts the venue to get his own way. ——————————————————————————————————1/6—— by Annette Dasey For all the seasonal fun in your area go to our Christmas event guide p370 Letters W EndA-G Lifestyle Tours

New managers (Simon Callow and Ciaran Hinds) call in sweet chorus girl Christine (Emmy Rossum) to fill her shoes and she dazzles the audience, pleasing the Phantom, who taught her to sing and is madly in love with her. But when La Carlotta returns she is reinstated. Big mistake: the Phantom is enraged. ——————————————————————————————————2/6—— Win Santa's bag of goodies 387 IS LOVE IN THE AIR FOR YOU? p348 Letters W EndA-G Lifestyle Tours

The Phantom's love transforms into madness and both Christine's and Raoul's lives are threatened. That wouldn't have been a problem but the majority of the tunes are mediocre with lyrics that rhyme in the most embarrassing of ways, a fact that's even more blatant out of the confines of a theatre. Like all Lloyd Webber musicals the music is repeated ad nauseam, ensuring you'll never want to hear it again. ——————————————————————————————————4/6—— PhoneZone - ringtones, etc 590 ITV1 IS LOVE IN THE AIR FOR YOU? p348 Letters W EndA-G Lifestyle Tours

This is just one big spectacle and at least it works on that level. The sets are lavish, the costumes are divine and the stars, especially beautiful Emmy Rossum, look the part. But looks are no replacement for a compelling story. ——————————————————————————————————5/6—— Holiday Guide 170 ITV1/five IS LOVE IN THE AIR FOR YOU? p348 Letters W EndA-G Lifestyle Tours

Gerard Butler and Patrick Wilson are powerful, Emmy Rossum fine but nothing special, and Brookie star Jennifer Ellison good as her sweet best friend. There is no humour, bar a little from Simon Callow, Ciaran Hinds and the hilarious Minnie Driver. But no-one can stop this seeming like an overlong and particularly dull Meat Loaf video. ——————————————————————————————————6/6—— Teletext rating ** (So-so) LINCOLN SUMMER BARGAINS See ITV1 p281 Letters W EndA-G Lifestyle Tours
