You'd hardly expect the album to abound with rousing powerchords and singalong choruses, then. Instead, it's a melange of half-heard, found noises, intuited sprung rhythms and sonic detritus. Song Meat is like tuning in to the raw frequencies of your own thought process and the only sin is the omission of the single FKO (**** Kelly Osbourne). 7/10 ——————————————————————————————————1/8—— by Ian Gittins Get your daily Marjorie Orr horoscope sent to your mobile See p108 Charts Louder GameCentral Total Ents

Now they're not so ubiquitous, it's easy to appreciate again just what classy songwriting is displayed on Writing To Reach You, Coming Around and co. The lazily-dismissed recent songs also stand tall, with new song The Distance a peerlessly breezy romp. Other than their odd refusal to return to the bouncy early songs such as Happy and U16 Girls, the Band Of The People tag is well merited. 8/10 ——————————————————————————————————2/8—— by John Earls Get your daily Marjorie Orr horoscope sent to your mobile See p108 Charts Louder Game entral Total Ents

Taste In Men and Pure Morning are genuinely strange, haunting dramas that showcase Brian Molko's enigmatic tease, and it's a leaden soul who can't still fling themselves about to Nancy Boy. Surprisingly cute new ballad I Do shows they remain good enough to make you scan your cows. A shame they've largely given up on us for the mainland. 8/10 ——————————————————————————————————3/8—— by John Earls CELEBRITY GOSSIP p617 Charts Louder GameCentral Total Ents

Did he ever really have it to start with? Aside from the obvious classics and the beautiful Sonnet, Ashcroft's hedonistic lifestyle and wild boasts masked a large amount of empty bluster in often toiling and joyless music. The early years had much tilting at windmills, while Lucky Man's smugness presaged the bland solo years. They haven't aged well at all. 5/10 ——————————————————————————————————4/8—— by John Earls GET GREAT GAMES+TONES ON YOUR MOBILE SEE ITV1 p355 Charts Louder G!meCentral Total Ents

Whereas before they were all about swagger, here the skeletal production lays bare the Followills' troubles with fame around keening and sparsely lovely ballads such as Milk. It reaches a peak on the moving, yodelling Day Old Blues. Which isn't to say the Molly's Chambers touch has deserted them, for half the album still rattles along terrifically. A successful step forward. 8/10 ——————————————————————————————————5/8—— by John Earls FULL GUIDE TO CHANNEL 4 p400 Charts Louder GameCentral Total Ents

After the dogmatic Know Your Enemy tried too hard to capture old polemics, the Manics take stock to find ghosts at every turn. As well as aching Richey Edwards tribute Cardiff Afterlife, there's the poignant Glasnost, as the electronic sheen gives James Dean Bradfield's more depth than ever. To Repel Ghosts and Bowie-esque Always/Never show belligerence remains. The band themselves surely wouldn't hold this document of last year's tour up against Get Yer Ya-Yas Out yet, beneath the reek of millions spent masking their wizened playing, the soul of one of the greatest rock and roll bands can still be detected. Jagger's croak gives a new depth to Gimme Shelter and Beast Of Burden, but packing the second disc full of new songs and obscurities is a dim way to showcase how viable they still are. ——————————————————————————————————7/8—— by John Earls WE'RE ACE FOR POP MUSIC p380 Charts Louder Game entral Total Ents

Forget appearances. As he rattles off endearing anecdotes about his eccentric childhood in Michigan, macrobiotic diet and cancelled Christmas and all, it's obvious why Stevens' music has a charming fairytale innocence. As piercingly direct as the music is, half the fun is Stevens' witty tales of how sexy boys have it bad too. Good. ——————————————————————————————————8/8—— by John Earls CHECK OUT THE CHARTS p355 Charts Louder G!meCentral Total Ents
