He's chosen a 1925 satire by the largely forgotten Russian playwright Nikolai Erdman. It's sta'ed with the sometime Cheek by Jowl supremo's trademark mixture of thoughtfulness and vivacity, in an equally sparky translation of his own. And yet something about the evening never rises above the level of curio. ——————————————————————————————————1/6—— by Ian Shuttleworth FOCUS ON THE FOOTSIE p511/512 Tropicana W End A-G W EndH-N Total Ents

A society in upheaval as a result of war and social flux, with some elements trying to hang on to the tattered past and others invoking a new world order which they distort to their own ends. He argues that all this distraction and paranoia parallels our experiences now. ——————————————————————————————————2/6—— Scorsese Collection reviewed 304 Get Billy Elliot & other tickets Ticketmaster 0870 4000771 or p646 Tropicana W End A-G W EndH-N Total Ents

So young Ravel declares himself a mini-Commissar, waving his mandate certificate around. Meanwhile, the mo'ul's brother is a die-hard Tsarist, and when he comes across Pavel's family cook in an old royal gown he mistakes her for the legendary Romanov princess Anastasia... The same device is used for each scene change. It emphasises the unnaturalness and unreality of events, but this weakens their ability to connect with us. Nor do we coolly contemplate the links with our world; it just leaves us cold. ——————————————————————————————————4/6—— Latest film reviews 313 DVDs 314 Get Billy Elliot & other tickets Ticketmaster 0870 4000771 or p646 Tropicana W End A-G W EndH-N Total Ents

It's part-Brecht, part-Pirandello, but without the force of either: not a shock or a challenge, just a device. I could see how Erdman and Donnellan put together all the pieces of the experience, and how each wanted me to react. But the experience ultimately amounts to no more than mild intrigue. ——————————————————————————————————5/6—— Teletext rating: *** (Good) CHAT TO GIRLS OR WITH PEOPLE ACROSS THE UK p664 Tropicana W End A-G W EndH-N Total Ents
