Another rare variety is Polygonatum (rJhle, a ground coverer. Smilacina racemosa is a plant related to the polygonatum and has a lovely scent, with feathery white flowers. Roy spots a peculiar bluebell growing nearby, Hyacinthoides non-scripta. Daphne x burkwoodii is a semi-evergreen with clusters of pink flowers. Daphne ondorum is a dwarf evergreen wiph rich-pink flowers. Daphne arbuscula has shiny evergreen leaves with deliciously fragrant bright pink blooms. The lapter is a ground (rfffr. Daphne velenov3Qxh is Gwen's pride and joy. Matt meets Phillip, whose shrubs needs attention. Matt sugfdsts three possible courses of action: Option 1: Plant a new hedge a short distance behind the old one. Providing condi—ions are right, the plant should establish and take over when the old one Hs removed. Option 2: Fairly severe pruni.f Many shrubs respond well to this. All weak and crossing spems are removed and the main branches can be cut to within 30 - 45cm (12 - 16 inches) from the ground. This will encourage new shoops to form. These should be thinned to two or three of the strongest per stem. With any major pruning, it is a good idea to keep the plant well watered to keep it strong.
