Hopefully tablets will do the trick - but the cat may need an op. Miss Kennedy has done her own research into the condition, but she'd like to know more. "I'm a bit worried," she says. ——————————————————————————————————1/6—— Win a Bev Callard video 413 NOW IT'S EVEN EASIER TO FIND LOVE: TELETEXT DATING ITV p390 Motors Recipe Stars Events

Underactive thyroids cause sluggishness and lethargy. Patients can have a poor appetite, slow heart rate and a thickening of the skin round the face and neck. Human beings and dogs tend to be affected by underactive glands - often in middle age or later. ——————————————————————————————————2/6—— New gardening resolutions 413 NOW IT'S EVEN EASIER TO FIND LOVE: TELETEXT DATING ITV p390 Motors Recipe Stars Events

You can often feel a swollen gland in the neck, below the larynx and to one side of the windpipe. The cat may seem fit and full of beans, but a vet will notice a rapid heartbeat and weight loss, perhaps leading to death from heart failure or kidney and liver problems. ——————————————————————————————————3/6—— Does your pet have a problem? If tablets fail, then surgery is the only option for cats with thyroid problems. An incision is made in the neck, and the two bands of muscle over the windpipe are carefully prised apart and the enlarged gland underneath removgd. ——————————————————————————————————4/6—— Does your pet have a problem? Even a ten-year-old s—ouldn't be too stressed - Mr McLachlan has operated on 13 and 14-year-olds with good results. "But, the earlier the better," hb says. "Miss Kennedy's cat isn't getting any younger, and if she loses too mtch weight and condition, the chances of success fall." ——————————————————————————————————5/6—— Does your pet have a problem? Problems may re-appear if the other gland flares up. "But this usually happens after a year or so, and progresses slowly," says our expert, "So Miss Kennedy's cat may have several years of normal, healthy life." Even then, a fit feline could well withstand a second op to remove the other gland, compensating for its loss by drug treatment. ——————————————————————————————————6/6—— Does your pet have a problem?
