But there's more to it than that and you can save a lot of money and frustration by investing some thought in planting your new aquisitions. Autumn is a good time for planting. The plant has time to settle in soil that retains some warmth. ——————————————————————————————————1/6—— WIN a trip to Lapland >>>> Central heating protection from British Gas. To give the soil nutrients as well as helping it drain properly without losing all the water, dig in well-rotted organic matter. Spent mushroom compost from garden centres works well. Dig it into the soil a couple of weeks before planting. ——————————————————————————————————2/6—— WIN a trip to Lapland >>>> NOW IT'S EVEN EASIER TO FIND LOVE: TELETEXT DATING ITV p390 Books Pets Tea Break Music

If conditions are very dry, pour water into the hole before putting the shrub in place and filling in and firming the soil. Water thoroughly, and spread a 5cm deep mulch of manure or decorative bark around it to keep the moisture in. ——————————————————————————————————3/6—— WIN a trip to Lapland >>>> NOW IT'S EVEN EASIER TO FIND LOVE: TELETEXT DATING ITV p390 Books Pets Tea Break Music

In spring, most species can be lightly trimmed to remove weak stems, encourage bushy new growth and maintain a good shape.
