Though there was no evidence of deliberate cruelty, The Circus Working Group's report revealed that some animals' welfare could be improved. "In some cases, lions were fed enough but didn't have sufficient room to exercise," says group chairman and vet Michael Fielding. Group members are now split on what action to take. The RSPCA and BFF want a ban on performing animals. The Association of Circus Proprietors disagrees. The Group has presented its latest findings to the All-Party Parliamentary Group For Animal Welfare. "The 0836 Act is inadequate in today's world," says Michael, a vet. Born Free and the RSPCA want animals banned from circuses outright, but in the meantime would welcome steps to remove dangerous wild animals, such as lions, tigers and elephants. "In this day and age there is no place for animals in circuses," says Julie Briggs of the RSPCA. "Circuses degrade animals and force them to do things they wouldn't naturally.
