Autumn is a good time for doing this. It's the end of the growing season but the plant has time to settle in soil that retains some warmth. Don't be tempted to just dig a hole, stick your new plant into it and pour some water on. It can be given a far better start in its new home. ——————————————————————————————————1/6—— Book Marks: a good read 414 HN A CAMCORDER >>>>>> Books Pets Tea Break Music

To pack the soil with nutrients as well as helping it drain properly, dig in some well-rotted manure. Spent mushroom compost from garden centres will also work well. Dig a 10cm layer in to the top 50cm of soil a couple of weeks before planting. ——————————————————————————————————2/6—— WIN a camcorder >>> NOW IT'S EVEN EASIER TO FIND LOVE: TELETEXT DATING ITV p390 Books Pets Tea Break Music

If conditions are very dry, pour water into the bottom of the soil before putting the shrub in place and filling. Water throughly and spread a 5cm deep mulch of manure or decorative bark around it to keep the moisture in. ——————————————————————————————————3/6—— Comp: win a camcorder >>> FIND YOURSELF A PEN PAL p412 Books Pets Tea Break Music

In spring, most species can be lightly trimmed to remove weak stems, encourage bushy new growth and maintain shape. And a great way to fill your garden for free is to take softwood cuttings from them at the same time. Poke them into pots and you'll soon have a new shrub. ——————————————————————————————————4/6—— Comp: win a camcorder >>> WE TALK TO VANESSA FELTZ p411 Books Pets Tea Break Music
