It ranks as one of the worst natural disasters to hit the US and one of the deadliest hurricanes in world history. Millions more lost their homes. Eight years later, the river broke its banks again, killing another one million. Flooding is caused by the high silt content of the river, which regularly blocks its smooth passage. "We wanted to look at the extremes of nature," says the book's researcher Ben Keith. "It made me realise what a powerful force nature is. "No matter what technology we have, we are incapable of controlling extreme weather such as Hurricane Georges.
