The UK says social issues are the sole responsibility of member states. There are several employment and training programmes which receive European funding. The RNID, for example, has received European money for the development of video and test telephony devices. It has also recognised the right of European deaf people to use sign language. The European Union is also funding a sign language research project run by the European Union of the Deaf.
