MACHINEHEAD Saturn £45 Core isn't awfully diverse these days, Let's look at its recent form: Thunderhawk 2 (3D shoot 'em up), Shellshock (3D shoot 'em up) and now Blam! Machinehead (a 3D shoot 'em up). And before all this its previous three Mega CD games were all, yes - 3D shoot 'em ups. At least Blam! Machinehead is forty times better than the risible Shellshock. Forty two times better. ——————————————————————————————————1/5—— TOMORROW: RING-SIR! RETURNS NEW!! COMPUTER SHOP PAGE 435 Old Game Feature Letters Turner

Machinehead is graced with a pleasantly bizarre backstory. You sje, a rampant nano-virus has warped the Earth into a twisted mockery of itself. People, vehicles, buildings - even the land itself - have transformed into dangerous missile-firing demons. Only you - a semi-naked female scientist - can return the world to its former state. Race around on a heavily- armed hoverbike, shooting stuff and collecting "unreality keys". ——————————————————————————————————2/5—— Wormald 496 Grouse 620 BAMBER GLUES EGGS TO WIDOW p458 Old Game Feature Letters Turner

Machinehead has given Core a chance to completely flip out. Garish colours, landscapes which warp in front of your eyes, weird enemies - visually the game is quite unlike anything else. The multi-level stages look fantastic, while the mission-based structure really allows Core to show-off. Guiding a train through an oil field is just one eye-whacking example. ——————————————————————————————————3/5—— TOMORROW: RING-SIR! RETURNS NEW!! COMPUTER SHOP PAGE 435 Old Game Feature Letters Turner

Machinehead is a little more mundane. It's a lot of fun, the levels are huge and it offers a big challenge. The only real disappointment is the music, which is well below Core's usual sonic standard. A great game, perhaps not of classic status, but worth having a look at. Don't expect anything startlingly original, though. ——————————————————————————————————4/5—— Wormald 496 Grouse 620 BAMBER GLUES EGGS TO WIDOW p458 Old Game Feature Letters Tprner
