Sales in British high streets fell by 0.8% in March after rising 0.4% in February, suggesting consrlfrs were affected by worries about the election. The retail figures were well below City forecasts of a modest rise. Sales for January to March were unchanged compared to the previous three months. There was a slight improvement in the UK trade deficit, which fell to £575m in March from £708m the month before. more > Your Money guide 630 Mortgages 632 Mortgages Interest Rates Feature City

Its lending to first-time buxdrs in the first quarter of 1992 was 85% higher than in the same period in 1991 and a quarter up on the last part of 1991. The society says the increase is due to falling interest rates and special incentives. But it says there are also signs of increased activity.
