A model father and a son, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Christopher Robin, are in the throes of the best father-son relationship since The Champ. But the cigar-puffing, hugely fat Coltrane aims to nick their land. The pair see off Coltrane as Jimmy Nail Michael Hordern and Cyril Cusack among others, steal the show with fine comic performances as village oddballs. The Karate Kid, Ralph Macchio, again goes out of his way to avoid using the chop-fooey he learned from mentor Noriyuki Pat Morita, who's now back in the US running a Bonsai shop. But just as Ralph wants to settle down and get some academic qualifications, there's a local bully and a corrupt millionaire who need putting down. The mixture of Eastern exoticism and Los Angeles daftness is hard to take sitting down. Walk out! (A.Turner) more > Reviews Index 620 Top 20 Films 623 Local Movies New Plays W End Plays BSVs

He becomes so uptight a boil breaks out on his neck which grows and speaks to him. Then it takes over entirely and poor Grant is lanced by mistake. The film has a surrealist's energy, even if it boils over towards the end into a sermon. As a satire of yuppiedom's nervous breakdown, it's spot on, hilarious and frightening. But we have seen one too many of these. It's about the menopausal crisis of college professor Gena Rowlands. Next door is a psychiatrist's study and through the wall she hears Mia Farrow's couch confessionals. These start to unhinge Rowlands and her relations with husband Holm and lover Hackman. Superbly acted intellectual posturing. (Adrian Turner) more > Reviews Guide 620 Local Movies 623 Local Movies New Plays W End Plays BSVs

Their neighbours are a Vietnam Vet and a plump busybody. They are the best of pals. But then the Klopeks move in. What is that strange noise and light in their basement and have they murdered another neighbour? A bizarre comedy of urban paranoia. Hanks is a funny straight comedian and he's ideal as the outwardly ordinary, inwardly strange 'burb. Original, funny and disturbing. No more than a record of a show, it's not a movie in any sense and seems more of a home video. The comedy is much earthier than Henry's TV work. Fans will enjoy it. Others, stay away. Now their kids are growing up and are forced into a nomadic life rather than settling into college and careers. Beautifully acted, it's an absorbing, perceptive study of political commitment, family loyalty and the way the past pervades the present.
