Most varnishes and paints contain toxins, as do glues and dyes. How do you get round the problem? Choose wood finished with natural waxes and oils. The first of the alternative paints and dyes -free from harmful chemicals- have entered the market. "Auro" paints and finishes are made from plant and tree resins and oils. (Available from The Whole Thing catalogue, address on pg 5) Naturally derived paints and finishes are beneficial to the user too, as they don't give off those suffocating fumes, or irritate lungs, nose and throat. >> Diversions 610 Recipe 614 Recipe Angling Bridge Reviews

It all depends on your choice of wood and finish. Buy a beautiful piece made from a tropical hardwood (mahogany, teak) and the chances are it's destroyed something of 'real' beauty - from the tropical rainforests. Choose another wood. There are lots of 'sustainably forested' European alternatives, like Danish beech (often used for flooring) elm and ash. Here, cut wood is replaced. more > Diversions 610 Recipe 614 Recipe Angling Bridge Reviews
