P545 ORACLE 545 Mon12 Oct C4 1700:02  6/7     THE SMITHS - retrospectively..2 MORRISSEY, JOHNNY MARR (guitar), ANDY ROURKE (ba3s( and MIKE JOYCE (drums) were THE indie band of the late '80s, from the short and sweet "Please Please Please, Let Me Get What I Want" to the overlong "Barbarism Begins at Home" - they had something to say and they said it perfectly. THE SMITHS succeeded simply because they were the best around - the combination of a singer who idolised Oscar Wilde and thought he was in a pop group, coupled with a guitarist who thought he was Keith Richards, was irresistible.
