Most drivers waited until the last 10 minutes of the session before venturing on to the wet, slippery track and it was Damon Hill who set the first two quick laps. Hill grabbed provisional pole but, as the rain started to fall again, his Williams teammate edged him out  Defending world champion Michael Schumacher continued in a downpour to clock the third best time.
