P209 CEEFAX 209 Tue 15 Nov 20:01/00       The European Commission has approved a wide-ranging plan to combat the so-called greenhouse effect. The Commission wants chlorofluoro carbons - CFCs - to be virtually eliminated by the year 2000. These are said to be responsible for the build-up of dangerous gasses in the atmosphere which, if unchecked, could raise the earth's temperature by four- and-a-half degrees in the next 40 years The Commission also wants major study and research programmes and much more energy conservation measures.
