A huge rubbing of the sepulchral brass of the 14th century abbot of St Albans, Thomas de la Mare, lies between the display cases, which include paintings of abbeys and ruins by a 19th century artist. An attractive handbook is available - a good example of modern literary work - and concise commentary boards place the displays in context. Admission to the exhibition is free - and it should not be missed.
