Lendl, the third seed, looked to be heading for trouble when American Trey Waltke took a 3-0 lead in the first set. But the Czech recaptured his timing and looked impressive in winning 6-4 6-2 6-3. Sweden's Wilander, who lost to Yannick Noah in the final of the French Open earlier this month, also had an emphatic victory. He beat Colin Viljoen of South Africa 6-3 6-2 6-1.

The 29-year-old American was beaten 3-6 7-6 7-6 4-6 6-4 by compatriot Nick Saviano. Pfister lost the third set after being penalised a game after an argument with the umpire. He had already lost a point for a similar offence. John McEnroe lost his temper after losing the first set of his match against unseeded Florin Segarceanu of Rumania. He was penalised a point for alleged ball abuse but successfully appealed. McEnroe won 4-6 6-2 6-3 6-3.
