Durie, the 13th seed, beat Tina Mochizuki of the United States 6-4 6-0 after trailing 3-1 in the first set. Miss Wade, winner of the women's title in 1974, had an equally easy match, defeating the 17-year-old Italian Rafaella Reggi 6-1 6-2. Amanda Brown, daughter of Norwich City football club manager Ken Brown, could not progress beyond the second round. She was beaten 6-3 6-4 by Sabina Simmonds of Italy.
