Manager Willie John McBride said Stephens, 30, injured ligaments in the match against Southland last week. He has trained only sparingly since then and in his latest session had to limp off the field when the knee gave way again. His replacement is Gerry McLoughlin of Shannon and Ireland. Another Irish forward, Cork lock Donal Lenihan, will also be joining the Lions, as a replacement for the injured Bob Norster

He had been invited by the Rugby Union to serve as chairman for a fifth successive season despite the fact that England finished bottom of the 1983 Five Nations Championship. He has declined the invitation for personal reasons. His successor as chairman is Derek Morgan, like Rogers a former England player. He has served on the selection committee for the last seven years.
