Equipment trouble aboard the ship had meant that any weather problems would force a landing in California instead. It had earlier been announced that a postponement to Saturday was certain, but improved weather now makes a Friday landing possible. Challenger, carrying the first US woman astronaut, blasted off from Kennedy on Saturday and has successfully launched satellites for Canada and Indonesia.
